The Coronavirus pandemic which is wreaking havoc all over the world and infected around 100,000 people might have been caused by two strands of the virus. One is more aggressive and deadly, the other is older and is less dangerous.
Chinese scientists, when analyzing viral samples taken from Coronavirus patients, found out that the L-type was the most common in the early phases when the outbreak starts in Wuhan.
However, as the virus makes it to other countries in the world, the S-type proves to be more common. This variant is less aggressive and is more closely resembled what we found on pangolins and bats.
Experts believe that the S-type might have infected humans earlier than the L-type but it does not cause severe symptoms so we are not alarmed by it.
The scientists behind this study warned that their conclusion was based on a small number of samples and further study needed to be conducted to have a more solid answer.
Some scientists said that the new strand of the virus might be the result of a large spread and the virus picks up mutations as it travels.
However, this does not answer the most pressing question now. Why the L-type was more common in samples of COVID-19 patients in Wuhan and the S-type was nowhere to be found?
Some researchers at the MRC-University of Glasgow Center for Virus Research said that the authors in China had misinterpreted the data and did not take the limitations of the statistical methods into consideration.
