By imitating the way our brain works, these chips aim to decrease the amount of power that is being used by artificial intelligence.

As reported by Fortune, an Australian startup namely Cortial Labs is building computer chips using biological neurons from mice and humans.

By imitating the way the human brain operates, the chips are created for the purpose of markedly decreasing the amount of power that is being used by artificial intelligence

According to Cortical Labs’ announcement, the company is having an intention to develop technology that is capable of exploiting the power of synthetic biology and the human brain’s all potential with the aim of creating a new generation of AI that could give the answer to society’s biggest problems.

Added by Fortune, the mouse neurons are extracted from embryos; however, neurons from humans are created by turning skin cells back into stem cells to gain neurons.

Using biological neurons as a powerful source for computers is not a new idea.

As a matter of fact, using biological neurons as a powerful source for computers is not a new idea. Cortical Labs’ announcement is publicized one week after a group of researchers from Europe managed to activate a working neural network that permits biological and silicon-based brain cells to enable communicating over the Internet.

Furthermore, the idea of using bacteria to build a computing system was also suggested by researchers at MIT in 2016.

Until now, Cortical’s mini-brains have processing power that is not as strong as a dragonfly brain. The company is further-developing it to enable its mouse-neuron-powered chips to play a game of “Pong”. CEO of the company, Hon Weng Chong also told Fortune that they were following the pioneer AI company DeepMind, which used the game to examine the power of its AI algorithms in 2013.
