Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, global pharmaceutical giants are racing to develop a vaccine that can tackle the novel Coronavirus. China National Biotec Group Co. from Beijing has been approved to test its COVID-19 vaccine in the UAE.
The update was updated on the WeChat account of the government-owned vaccine developer. The update says that CNBG has received the approval to put its COVID-19 vaccine in Phase III trials.
Not many details were revealed about the Phase III trials. However, the company stated that it had partnered with Abu Dhabi-based G42.
The Chinese firm will be working with the cloud computing and artificial intelligence firm to carry the trial as well as producing the vaccine locally if the trials prove to be successful.
Chinese pharmaceutical companies who are trying to come up with a COVID-19 vaccine is facing a problem. Bloomberg reported that Chinese companies, having reached the final testing stage, had been searching for locations having active virus outbreaks.
Since China has a low number of remaining cases, conducting trials in the region isn’t feasible. Meanwhile, UAE, with hundreds of new cases registered every day, seems to a more appropriate location.
Bloomberg also confirmed that CNBG was the first vaccine developer from China to conduct the Phase III trial. And it becomes one of the world’s first vaccine makers to be authorized to carry out the final stage testing.
CNBG’s two-part vaccine has been tested on around 2,000 people during Phase I and II, which were conducted in China.
One of the vaccines has proved to be safe, while the results from the other one will come out on June 28.
Employees of CNBG which include its senior executive as well as that of the parent company, have already received the vaccine shots.
The vaccine has also been given to employees who are going to other foreign countries for work of living in high-risk areas.
