China May Have The Biggest Nuclear Icebreaker In The World

With nuclear icebreaker ships, both China and Russia have taken a big step to achieve the ambition to dominate the Arctic Ocean.

Biggest-ever Nuclear Icebreaker

China is reportedly building a nuclear icebreaker that is supposed to be the largest one in the world. Designed with the 33,069-ton weight, this ship is able to shatter and crushing all kinds of water covered by ice. Even the Russian nuclear-powered ships can’t be as large as the Chinese one.

The South China Morning Post reported that, on March 20, the China General Nuclear Power Group passed the deadline to receive bids of Chinese firms who want to build a ship with the 152m length. With the project, the major energy corporation may become dominant in the naval field of the Arctic.

The nuclear icebreaker ship will be the first surface vessel in China, which is powered by nuclear. It can reach the maximum speed of up to 11.5 knots or more than 13 miles each hour. In addition, it is expected to be a “cleaner” for all aircraft carriers propelled by nuclear. The news was gathered from the South China Morning Post.

Up to now, Russia has been the only one running nuclear icebreakers. However, in the upcoming time, the nation will be no longer alone when it comes to advanced technology. With nuclear icebreaker ships, both China and Russia have taken a big step to achieve the ambition to dominate the Arctic Ocean.

However, many of us may be curious about what China is going to exploit the new kind of ship after the establishment is complete. The nation has kept it a secret. They may aim to use it for research or military purposes. Both of the possibilities are, of course, entirely feasible. According to the South China Morning Post, the China General Nuclear Power Group just used the phrase “experimental ship platform” when talking about the nuclear icebreaker project.
