Ookla, the company behind the Speedtest.net-a website to test internet speed, has released a report indicating India’s internet infrastructure as well as speeds status.
According to the report, for this year's second and third quarters, there is a 16.5% increase in terms of download speeds in the fixed broadband category. The maximum speed is 34.07Mbps in Sept.
Regarding broadband speeds, India has much faster broadband, compared to its neighboring countries Bangladesh and Pakistan at 24.02Mbps and 9.14Mbps respectively.
With Jio’s release of GigaFiber internet connections, the fixed broadband speeds are expected to continue to rise.
However, when mobile data download speeds are considered, it is a whole different story. The mobile download speeds see no considerable improvement with the maximum ranging from 10.63Mbps to 11.18Mbps, which are significantly lower than Bangladesh’s mobile data download speeds (10.43Mbps) and Pakistan’s (15.55Mbps).
The report also mentioned the country’s 4G network availability. 4G connectivity is getting stronger in India. The highest figure was 87.9% during 2019 Q2 and Q3. It is once again significantly higher than Bangladesh at 58.7% and Pakistan at 85.9%.
In terms of broadband speeds between Indian cities, the report pointed out a notable difference. For instance, at 51.07Mbps, Chennai has the fastest broadband. Next is Bengaluru at 42.50Mbps. At 41.68Mbps, Bengaluru takes the third spot. Meanwhile, Nagpur has the slowest broadband speeds at 20.10Mps. Next is Pune at 22.78Mbps. At 23.20Mbps is Kanpur.
Mobile networks in cities showed minimal differences. The city that has the best 4G speeds is Mumbai at 11.87Mbps. At 11.80Mbps is Indore. The third, fourth, and fifth place belong to Vishakapatnam (11.74Mbps), Hyderabad (11.48Mbps), and Kolkata (11.46Mbps).
