With Coronavirus spreading around the world like a wildfire, the need for a cure is more urgent than ever. And now Bill Gates through his Bill And Melinda Gates Foundation is trying to turn this into a reality as soon as possible.
15,000 medicinal molecules have been paid by the foundation to be shipped to a Rega Institute for Medical Research in Leuven, Belgium from the Scripps Research Institute in California for testing as a potential cure to the deadly virus.
In The Scripps Institute’s collection, there is a wide range of drugs’ active ingredients. These drugs can already exist or are in development.
Professor Johan Neyts will be in charge of the analysis. The results are expected to come out 14 days after the shipment arrives.
In an interview with De Standard newspaper, he said:
He further added:
Neyts is not expecting to come up with a groundbreaking cure to Coronavirus but some action against the deadly virus can still be counted as a step towards progress.
The number of confirmed cases keeps rising every day. Other countries continued to evacuate its citizens from the Hubei province as well as restricting Chinese or travelers coming back from the country from entering their territories.
The virus is believed to have come from Wuhan’s Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, which is a trading place for wildlife. On 23 January, to prevent the virus from spreading, the Chinese authorities put the city under lockdown. Some airlines have also suspended their flights to mainland China. According to researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the genome sequenced taken from seven patients were reportedly 96% identical to coronavirus from bats.
