If you’re an online streamer, you’re putting yourself in the public eye, and that leaves you open to negativity and criticism from viewers and followers. Thankfully, there are ways that you can deal with toxic behavior from others so it won’t affect you in a negative way in the end.
Check out our tips to learn a few ways to overcome the negativity that might be sent your way, and to protect yourself from strangers as well.
First Off, Take Steps to Protect Your Identity
When you decide to become an online streamer, one of the first things you should consider is using a name that is different from your real name in order to protect your identity. Beyond that, other steps you can take to stay safe while streaming include never revealing your location information, never posting photos of the exterior of your house, and making sure there isn’t any location data on any photos that you decide to post on your social media pages.
Remove Your Information from Online Databases
There are many online databases that make it easy to look someone up by their full name to access their personal information, such as their address and property ownership, as well as their police records and more. By being proactive and removing yourself from these databases, you can take a smart step towards preventing strangers from looking you up and using your information to harass you. Thankfully, Nuwber gives you a super simple way to opt-out if you don’t want your information to be listed on the site.
Side note: If you are being stalked or harassed by someone, you can try looking them up and running a background check to get more information and figure out who they really are.
Block Users That Misbehave, and Report Them to the Platform You’re Using
If you are using a platform that gives you the option to block users who are acting in a toxic manner towards you or your followers, simply do so. You might even have the option to report them as well so you can alert the platform to their behavior and perhaps have them removed completely. Just keep in mind that those people might come back by creating a new account, so you will need to remain diligent.
Prevent Spam Comments
Another option might be to apply a filter for spam that will look for certain words in people’s comments. You can determine how strong you want the filter to be, and how much you want the filter to remove, but this can be a great way to prevent negative and toxic statements from getting through. Once the filter detects those words, the comments will be blocked so you won’t see them. Plus, your followers won’t see them either, so they won’t have to be exposed to that toxic behavior either.
Ask Your Online Community of Followers and Fans for Help
Focusing on the positive comments from followers who appreciate what you do can be incredibly helpful when dealing with negative behavior from online trolls. If your following is strong and dedicated enough, they might even help you fight off toxic comments by helping you moderate what goes on during your streams.
While it might not be possible to avoid 100% of the negative comments from others online, it’s worth putting in the effort to minimize their impact.
