There have been a lot of controversies about Zomato these days. The story began when a Hindu man named Amit Shukla, tweeted that he wants to cancel his order because he doesn’t want his food to be delivered by a Muslim deliveryman and asked for a refund. However, the company refused to refund and said: “Food doesn’t have a religion. It is a religion.”
Since then, there was a lot of hate toward the company. A group of people buried the company in tweets criticizing them for disregarding Hindu beliefs.
Zomato is still maintaining its stance on this issue. While half the people online are bashing Zomato, others are showing their support to the company on Twitter. From celebrities to even rival company UberEats, they supported this move made by Zomato.
The haters made their next move to show their anger. They started trending #BoycottZomato to uninstall the Zomato app from their phones. They also made a “review bomb" toward the company by rated the app 1 star, along with a bunch of bad reviews on Google Play. In just a few days, Zomato got thousands of one-star ratings and negative reviews said that the company supports Muslim customers more than Hindu ones.
Despite that, there were also lots of people rated the app 5 stars on Google Play, showing their support to the company for standing strong on this important issue. The number of these two opposite kind of reviews is quite even.
The same thing happened with UberEats. Their app received a bunch of one-star ratings and bad reviews from haters because they tweeted to support Zomato. Meanwhile, Swiggy is getting a lot of five-star reviews for its app from Hindu supporters.
In fact, for food delivery service, Zomato app and Swiggy's have the same popularity, much higher than UberEats. However, the number of reviews tell a different story. Zomato is now leading with about 2,722,000 reviews. UberEats' has 1,421,000 reviews, which is also a large number, while Swiggy has just 769,000 reviews.
This situation may not affect its business much. If we look in a certain way, it might even help the company.
