Angry Birds Is The First Mobile Game To Get Over 1 Billion Downloads

No one can forget their first smartphone, no matter if it was an Android or iOS phone, especially those living the ear of transformation from a feature phone.

Apart from a bunch of features across many categories, a phone with great hardware can also allow users to play games. And Angry Birds was a mobile game that got popular quickly among both children and adults. This game has just turned 10 years old.

Rovio celebrated this occasion with a tweet it posted on December 12.

The company unveiled the game on December 11, 2009, which was originally developed by four developers in Finland. It took them eight months to bring this viral game to life. They made the pigs the bad guys in this game because during the time the game was under development, swine flu took many lives around the world.

The game was available to phones running Android, iOS, Windows, and Symbian. The original Angry Birds was the world’s first game to have got more than one billion downloads. It also became the first mobile game that was played on the ISS.

In this game, there are pigs stealing eggs from birds. Unlike real birds, the birds in the game couldn’t fly. So to fight the pigs, the birds had to use a catapult to crash the pigs’ lair so that they could destroy the lair and take their eggs back.

The game was so entertaining because it was simple and easy to play, along with the birds’ intuitive sounds among other elements. The game was so successful that there was an increase in the sale of merchandise with the Angry Birds theme, which made the black, yellow, blue, and red birds cultural icons. There were even Angry Birds-theme balloons in parades.

The years after that saw more variations and spin-offs of the original game launched including one with the Star Wars franchise.
