Parents May Be Putting Their Kid's Safety Online At Risk

A survey conducted by OLX India indicates that more than half of parents are at risk of endangering their kid’s safety online.

Around 55% of participating parents in a survey from OLX India said that they weren’t confident in protecting themselves online.

The survey points out that although parents realize the importance of being safe on the Internet, they actually don’t know how to do it. 61% of the surveyed respondents said that they’ve carefully instructed their kids to be safe online. Nevertheless, they actually didn’t know the exact practices and tools needed for online security.

Parents don't really know to protect their kids on the Internet.

The research's purpose is to understand the shopping behavior of parent-child, acknowledge digital literacy habits and other different aspects that relate to parenting. 4000 parents from different cities in India including Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, and Kolkata took part in the survey.

Moreover, the survey shows that in terms of online shopping decisions, 52% of them are made with pester power.

Older parents are less influenced by this, compared to younger ones from 25 to 35 years old. 69% claimed that they can exercise caution whereas 31% of parents acknowledged overspending.

Pester power can manipulate online shopping decisions.

29% stated that they go shopping impulsively with no pre-research while 36% admitted to buying after doing research carefully.

It’s interesting to discuss parents’ attitude towards their kid’s no-longer-used products and the time quality spent together within a family. Parents that prioritize spending time with their kids accounted for 56%, mostly indoors and over meals.

The number of parents storing the used products of their children is not high. Only 31% of parents said they want to keep their kids stuff. 25% of parents want to sell those old products to others to recycle them. 43% of them prefer to dispose or give away that old stuff.
