The Mediterranean evolution is a topic attracting great interest from researchers, especially when they are trying to concatenate its geological past events and a new hidden land. In which, the new continent is thought to have emerged roughly 140 million years ago, located under Southern Europe and is referred to as 'Greater Adria'.
The geology of the Mediterranean is known for its sea running between Spain and Iran, and is situated between mountains and dips. The new continent was discovered by scientists while researching these mountains. Although the scientists' firm evidence all lead to the finding of the legendary Atlantis Islands, the Greater Adria is a land that is as large as Greenwich, and you may have come there without any notice.
Professor Douwe van Hinsbergen in the faculty of tectonics and paleogeography of Utrecht University, argued in his research that almost all the mountain chains under investigation have come from the same continent. Over 200 million years ago, the continent split from North Africa. Its remaining strip today starts from Turin through the Adriatic Sea and finishes at the end of Italy.
Plate tectonics is theoretically a result of ocean and continental formation. Tectonic plates move along with the other in huge fault- line areas without resizing. Particularly for the Mediterranean, the geology here still has a lot of mysteries for scientists.
Meanwhile, the Great Adria is mostly underwater and is obscured by shallow seas, coral reefs as well as sediments. In which, the rocks formed by sediments have been removed and are located on Southern Europe’s mantle. This led to the formation of mountain ranges in many areas. Today, these mountains are known as the Balkans, Greece and Turkey, which are three famous Alps mountain ranges.
To reach this conclusion, scientists had investigated in surveys, geological mapping and previously thought-out ideas about the formation of things among 30 countries. Also, it is known that the lost area was once a continent formed roughly 240 million years ago in the Triassic era. Today, traces of several kilometers of the Great Adria are still found in the mountains, and they formed some geographical areas of Romania, North Turkey, Armenia.
