There are not many stainless-steel cars that have been made, except for commercial purposes. Up to this point, there are only two stainless-steel vehicles worth mentioning, the DMC DeLorean which was made from 1981 to 1983 and the Cybertruck from Tesla.
There must be a reason why stainless steel can’t replace regular steel. For DeLorean, the original idea was that the stainless-steel cover would allow owners to easily repair the car when it was dented. Moreover, the glossy appearance of the car would be a plus point in terms of advertising.
For Tesla, it is not only for marketing purposes as another company of Musk, SpaceX, has already been using stainless steel for the manufacturing of spaceships. This move not only confirms the durability of stainless steel but is also an effective marketing move as it gives consumers a sense of safety as they are sitting inside the shell of a rocket.
Regarding practicality, since no car manufacturers use stainless steel to build their cars, there is a lack in the supply chain.
When comparing the DeLorean and the Cybertruck, we will find some big similarities as well as differences.
In the late 1970s and the early 80s, car lovers had never witnessed anything like the DMC DeLorean. With its stainless-steel cover and gull-wing doors, the DeLorean had garnered a lot of attention.
Before the 2010s end, Elon Musk launches the Cybertruck with a one-of-a-kind appearance.
At the time when the DeLorean was launched, its founder John DeLorean led a flamboyant life.
The CEO of Tesla is somewhat similar to John DeLorean. However, the difference is that Musk has exceeded DeLorean’s achievement. He sold more cars and established other companies. Among them is SpaceX.
DeLorean actively took part in the design of the car.
And so does Musk.
DeLorean was acquainted with lots of celebrities. This is a picture of him with Johnny Carson who also owned a Delorean and was an investor of the company.
And here is Musk with singer Grimes at an event.
The body of the DMC DeLorean was made using 304 stainless steel, which is a quite common grade for steel.
Meanwhile, the Cybertruck uses “Ultra-Hard 30X Cold-Rolled stainless-steel,” which is far more superior than 304.
The DeLorean was the brainchild of Giorgetto Giugiaro, a legend in the field of automakers. He had worked on numerous cars, from the fancy cars like Ferraris, Maseratis to the humble VWs.
The Cybertruck was designed by Franz von Holzhausen who is the design chief of Tesla. von Holzhausen has taken part in the designing of every electric car since the 2012 Model S.
No more than 10,000 DMCs were manufactured before John DeLorean’s reputation was sunk by his allegations of trafficking drugs. That combining with iffy finances ruined the car company.
The cybertruck hasn’t been put in production yet. A few days ago, Musk was seen driving the truck to hang out with his friends. But up to this point, Tesla is still running.
The DeLorean was forgotten. Thanks to the “Back to the Future” movie in 1985, the car’s fame was revived.
At first, the time-machine DMC was just a joke from the film’s producer. But then the DeLorean became a symbol of popular culture.
The Cybertruck has only made its appearance on video and at a Tesla event. Cyberpunk 2077 game maker CDPR is planning on putting the truck in its game.
While in the movies, modifications were made to the engine of the DeLorean so that it could use fusion technology.
Cybertruck is an electric truck, which means it uses clean energy. The car also has an autonomous mode, something DeLorean could only dream of.
The engine of the DMC is a 130-horsepower V6, allowing it to go from 0 to 100kmph in around 10.5 seconds.
The most expensive version of the Cybertruck can go from 0 to 100kmph in under 2.9 seconds. Its towing capacity is 6,350 kg. One full charge allows it to reach a range of 804 km. These numbers prove how far technology has come.
There will be three versions of the Cybertruck with almost the same specs. The only difference is the acceleration time, wheel drive, towing capacity, range, and price.
The single motor rear-wheel-drive – 28 Lakh
- The acceleration rate from 0 to 100 km per hour is under 6.5 seconds.
- Towing capacity is under 3,400 kg.
- Range: 400 km.
Dual moto all-wheel-drive – 35 Lakh
- Acceleration rate: under 4.5 seconds.
- Towing capacity: under 4,535 kg.
- Range: 480 km.
Triple motor all-where drive – 50 Lakh
- Acceleration rate: under 2.9 seconds.
- Towing capacity: under 6,350 kg.
- Range: 804 km.
Cybertruck still has the standard Autopilot mode. If customers want to have the “full self-driving” mode, they will have to pay an additional $7,000. Right from this moment, customers can pre-order the Cybertruck on the official website of Tesla. At the end of the event came a little surprise: an electric ATV which is also produced by Tesla. Users can drive it directly to the trunk of the Cybertruck and charge it there.
