Several around the world have been deploying an overhead electric line for vehicles powering. And it is going to be soon for India to have such a project with a 10km electric stretch to be installed on Delhi-Mumbai expressway.
It was Nitin Gadkari, the Highways minister, who directly confirmed this project. According to him, the electric highway will be in operation in the next two or three years.
The idea behind the project is to equip the Delhi-Mumbai expressway with overhead electric supplies. These lines would then power EVs running on the road below like buses and trucks, powering them on the go.
Such a method would help reduce range-anxiety and increase range on such vehicles. So when vehicles run out of battery, instead of having to pull over for charging, the overhead electric supplies will power the vehicles on the go and re-feed the batteries.
Sources stated that it would take Rs 200 crore to build a 10-crore stretch and supporting systems such as overhead substations and cables. A truck manufacturer will also be enlisted by the ministry to produce some prototypes.
This project is not the first one in the world. On May 7, 2019, Germany launched its electric high way which stretches for 10 km located in the south of Frankfurt. The system has been used for the powering of hybrid trucks to cut down the emissions from delivery trucks run on diesel.
India’s electric highway project will have the same purpose. However, supporting vehicles will be needed to help connect the overhead lines. Moreover, the partnership with the OEMs will play an important role as to when the project is carried out.
