90YO Woman Became UK’s First Person To Receive Pfizer Vaccine

On Tuesday, the UK became the world’s first country to administer the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, launching its mass vaccination program. The plan is to vaccinate 4 million people. In the UK, 90-year-old Margaret Keenan became the first person to be injected with the vaccine. She received the first of the two shots at University Hospital, Coventry right ahead of her birthday.

In a statement, Keenan expressed that she felt privileged to be the first to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. In three weeks, she will get her second injection. She is expected to have full immunity against COVId-19 one week after her second dose.

The second person to be injected with the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine was 81-year-old William Shakespeare from Warwickshire. Nure May Parsons who was in charge of administering the vaccine to Keenan and Shakespeare said that it was an honor to be a part of this historic day.

Last week, with its approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, the UK was the first in the world. According to Pfizer, the vaccine proved to be 95% effective in protecting people against the novel coronavirus.

The vaccine is one of those vaccines developed by the world’s scientists in the race to fight the pandemic. The vaccine, developed by US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and German biotech firm BioNTech, is the first to use revolutionary mRNA genetic material to counter the coronavirus. The clinical trial results for two other vaccines, one by Oxford University and one by Moderna have also been announced.

In the US, the FDA is examining the Pfizer vaccine and the Moderna one. The supply chain has already been prepared for the Pfizer vaccine’s rollout. At the end of November, the first shipment was delivered to Chicago.
