Samsung Galaxy S10+: Latest Killer Phone From Samsung

The newly-launched Galax S10+ is a solid flagship smartphone from Samsung in most of the aspects. Check out our review for more details.

It might not be the smartphone of the future but for a handheld device for today’s purposes, the Samsung Galaxy S10+ definitely takes some beating.

The smartphone sports curved edges and a full 6.4-inch screen that runs all the way from top to bottom interrupted only by the dual cameras located on the right. Samsung might not the pioneer in this notch design but they have elevated it to a whole new level. It is arguably the best on the market at the moment.

The Galaxy S10+ is able to support a QHD+ but most users are pleased with its HD+. However, if you ever feel the need to increase the resolution, the option is right there.

For there is not a bezel, the phone is still manageable despite the large screen. The S10+ is wider than a Huawei Mate 20 Pro but smaller than an iPhone XS Max but it is still lighter than both of them. With a screen of that size, the weight will heavily determine how comfortably users handle the phone.

Bigger screen means you have a wider display but it also comes hand in hand with some unwanted touches from your palm. However, that is only a minor issue compared to the range of benefits the size brings. The phone’s surfaces mean that you can lay it flat on the table to type or watch something without it rocking.

At the bottom, there is a USB-C port and a 3.5mm socket for headphone. It can survive 30 minutes 1.5m deep under water, which qualifies it to be categorized as IP68.

Performance

The US version has a different processor than the rest of the world, which are the Snapdragon 855 SoC and the Exynos 9820 respectively. the Indian model will be powered by an Exynos 9820 SoC. In most cases, these two processors should have no difference in performance. For typical use, the phone is highly responsive and for gaming, it runs smoothly even when you have been using it for some time.

The S10+ has been a major improvement compared with the S8 introduced back in 2017.

As for the battery, you can expect a more powerful battery that supports operation for up to 26 hours. With battery saving off, a typical user can enjoy an average of 30 hours of continuous use. With average usage, you can expect the S10+ to hold up from 7 AM to noon the next day.

Galaxy S10 Plus Wireless Charging Stand

Please note that this phone from Samsung, like the Google Pixel 3, has the adaptive battery technology, which means it will adjust the battery life according to your using habit.

One major drawback here is the charging time. With the cable, it takes about 100 minutes to fully charge and even longer for charging wirelessly.

Samsung One UI

Samsung finally sees some positive signs with its attempt to improve software performance. The One UI is considered to be setting the standard for the way software should do to be compatible with larger and larger phones.

To adapt to the bigger size of the screen, Samsung has moved things most users have to touch regularly down to the bottom, leaving what you have to read at the top. Google is adapting the same technique but Samsung is obviously more successful.

While the gesture navigation is quite competent, Bixby, the voice assistant is nowhere near as good so not everyone will be so keen to active it.

Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner

Another improvement is the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, which is thought to be better than the in-display fingerprint sensors on the Mate 20 Pro.

Its speed still lags behind the 2018 sensors but with a working rate of 90%, this is just a minor disadvantage. The S10+’s 2D face unlock provides more convenience but no match for the security level of the iris scanning.

Camera

One of the clinchers of the S10+ is its triple camera setup, which sports a 12MP camera, a 12MP telephoto camera, and a 16MP ultra wide angle camera. They allow users to smoothly change the zoom magnification from 0.5 to 2x and to 10x hybrid zoom.

The aperture of the camera can move back and forth between f1.5 and 2.4 to suit the current light condition. With favorable light, the pictures it takes are of great colors and in details. Even in darker condition, the pictures’ quality is still decent but it is nowhere near the performance of Huawei and Google’s night mode.

The ultrawide-angle camera allows for background blurring and color isolating and you can upload the pictures straight to Instagram.

Verdict

With fierce competition from Huawei and Apple, the S10+ is the best smartphone Samsung made in the last three years.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Hoyle 14

The screen is nice and big, the performance is amazing, the battery is durable, cameras are real killers, plus the Powershare. You have all of these benefits squeezed in a lightweight handheld device.

The One UI has made the S10+ a step ahead of Huawei and it gives users twice as much storage space at a cheaper price than the XS Max from Apple.

The S10+ is not without some downers. The nigh mode is not as good as that of Huawei and Apple and the large screen means that you may accidentally trigger something with your palm. However, these are not a deal killer. The S10+ is still the best bet out there for a big screen smartphone.

Pros:

  • Big but still manageable screen.
  • Ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner.
  • Long battery life.
  • Powershare function and wireless charge.
  • Excellent performance
  • Amazing software

Cons:

  • Charging takes a long time
  • The night mode is worse than that of Huawei and Apple
