Recently, OnePlus 7 Pro was launched in the market with its premium features. OnePlus offers a QHD+ Fluid AMOLED display that has HDR support with a 90Hz refreshing rate. The handset comes with powerful the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 clubbed with Adreno 640 and overall provides a premium experience to the user. However, according to news and user reviews, there is one thing that is disappointing about this phone.
Its AMOLED display is harmful to your eyes. Many people spend most of their time using their smartphones even at night with the lights off, but it is very detrimental to eyes. People complained to OnePlus that their eyes were hurt after watching videos on YouTube for up to half an hour. Some users also posted reviews on the OnePlus community about the issues.
As per data and research, when people work on other screens like desktop, tablet or other phones, they don't face this problem, but while using OnePlus 7 pro, it is quite frequent.
How does screen brightness work?
Most companies now offer Liquid Crystal Display technology using a backlight which automatically adjusts the brightness of pixels in products such as smartphones, TV, tablets, etc. But recently, many companies apply AMOLED & OLED displays in its premium flagships. Instead of the backlight, AMOLED and OLED technology lights up each pixel individually.
How harmful is OnePlus 7 Pro to your eyes?
If we talk about its flickering, LCD screen flicks thousands of times and is hard to observe through naked human eyes. In AMOLED display, it is around 240 Hzert and sufficient for the pupil to shrink and expand to adjust according to the changes. For more sensitive users, they still don't notice, but their eyes will get tired from the flickering. And the OnePlus 7 Pro has an AMOLED display, which flickers at a rate of 122Hz.
Considering some other smartphones, the iPhone XS Max and Galaxy S10 feature AMOLED displays and have the typical flickering rate of 240Hz. Meanwhile, the iPhone XR comes with an LCD screen, flickering thousands of times and doesn't tire human eyes.
How can we fix this problem in OnePlus 7 Pro
Apparently, OnePlus knew this could become a problem for users, hence came up with a new feature. Instead of using the conventional pulse-width modulation way in changing the brightness on the phone screen, it adjusts the power of the screen's circuit to change the brightness. This technique significantly reduces screen flickers at low brightness, and users' eyes won't get tired easily.
However, according to OnePlus, turning this feature on "may lead to abnormal colors being displayed in some cases" but it does not affect the color balance too much.
How to enable the DC dimming option
First, open Settings on the phone, type OnePlus Laboratory, then you will see the option 'DC dimming.' Then, activate the function.
