Our phones used to have no cameras, now they have two, three and even four cameras. However, if this trend keeps going further, there will be a time when users with trypophobia cannot look at the back of their phones.
You certainly have heard of the five-camera phone from Nokia, the photo of the phone concept may have overwhelmed you at first. But that’ll change when you look at LG’s latest patent which goes much further than the number five. We are talking about a phone design with sixteen cameras. Nope, you don’t mishear or misread the number, it’s really 16.
Last week, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted LG with a new patent, which shows a smartphone design with 16 camera lenses, they have different focal lengths and characteristics.
As scary as this number may seem, there may be some cool stuff to expect.
With impressive 16 cameras, you can take 16 photos at one time then select the one you like most. You can also take a picture with a wide angle, a shot with a longer focal length. Considering how much photo technology has developed recently, LG’s concept seems pretty plausible.
Notably, the depth perception in smartphones has vastly improved, resulting in the Portrait mode with a more precise shallow depth of field simulation. Moreover, the phone may even let us change the focus after taking the photo. LG’s patent also refers to stitching different parts from other pictures together and more manipulations that you can use after the pictures have been taken.
You may be curious about the selfie camera too, right?
You will be able to take 16 selfies at a time with your rear cameras. Yes, and the phone will help you do that with a little mirror on the phones back, as illustrated in the patent.
Are you thinking that it’s so weird and inaccurate to take a selfie with your rear camera? Well, maybe you’re right, but with 16 pictures taken at a time, there must be at least one that works.
All these concepts seem not so far away regarding how LG has got its reputation for bringing new things to smartphone cameras, the wide-angle shooter for example. Plus, we’ve already had a camera with 16 lenses and sensors on the market, which can take up to 52MP photos. If you think about how fast technology has evolved lately, transferring 16 lenses from a camera to a pocket-sized phone is foreseeable in the near future.
