Uber did announce its plan to lay off 3,700 workers last week, but now the situation may be more serious as it already shared that an additional number of 3,000 employees will also have to leave the company. As it turned out, the ride-hailing platform is preparing to cut off at least a quarter of its labor force within just a month.

According to The Wall Street Journal, not only 45 offices across the globe but also experimental, non-core operations will also be shut down in the coming weeks. This piece of news officially came from an internal email that CEO Dara Khosrowshahi sent to his staff.
The COVID-19 virus has cast a shadow over the global economy and companies like Uber. In comparison with the previous year, Uber’s ridesharing business saw an 80% drop in April while this sector accounted for nearly three-quarters of the company’s revenue before the pandemic took over the world.
Despite that UberEats is growing amid the difficult time, it’ll hardly be enough to cover other businesses like AI and autonomous driving researches. Even when Uber riders and drivers are asked to wear masks and comply with other protection measures, it remains unclear whether such practices could result in more rides.

Earlier this month, hundreds of Uber employees from Indian offices had to go due to the extension of COVID-19 lockdown in India.
Lyft, the main competitor of Uber in the US, is struggling with similar issues and planning to cut off 1,000 jobs as well.
