On Monday, at the sidelines of the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2019 held annually in California, the company’s CEO Tim Cook stated that his company is not a monopoly. The speech was made for replying to CBS News during an interview at WWDC, after discussing how bad a lack of digital privacy affects to the democracy.
"We are not a monopoly", Tim Cook answered a question by Norah O’Donnell from CBS, which asked Tim Cook whether Apple is too big to be separated.
Note that calls big tech giant like Apple and other names to break up are not new. Since Chris Hughes – a former co-founder of Facebook said the social networking company Facebook need to be separated because of is misused power. Following that, Senator Elizabeth Warren and numerous politicians have supported his idea. On the other hand, Cook said he strongly disagrees with 2020 presidential hopeful Sen. Warren’s call for it to break up.
For having so much power, tech giants in Silicon Valley have come under fire. On Monday, the US Lower House took off a plan =to determine whether those companies whether they are involved in violating antitrust laws and whether the current laws are able to fight with anti-competitive activities. On the other hand, there also will be a number of hearings required by the US authorities to keep things in check.
According to the Washington Post, Apple along with Amazon, Facebook, and Google are under the scope of the US government as they're benefiting from their dominance position.
