The 35 US Tech Startups That Have Reached $1 Billion Valuation

Author

In 2018, there are currently 35 tech startups that managed to reach the unicorn status aka $1 billion valuation.

Each year, there are 100 million startups founded every year, including a lot of tech startups, according to GEM national report. When Facebook acquired Instagram for the price of $1 billion (Rs. 7,281.5 crores) in 2013, it was a very big sum of money.

The creator of Fortnite, Epic Games, reached $1 billion valuation this year

5 years from that, we all seem to be used to many valuations and acquisitions worth billion dollars. Uber is just valued at around $72 billion while Facebook acquired yet another social media platform for 19 times higher than what they paid for Instagram, $19 billion for WhatsApp.

But, it doesn’t mean that building a company worth a billion dollar from scratch is an easy task. According to CB Insights, there was only less than 1% of companies that had raised venture capital could become a unicorn - a company that is valued at $1 billion or higher.

Very close to the end of 2018, 35 tech startups successfully managed to reach the valuation of $1 billion as reported by PitchBook.

There are also other companies whose businesses are not in tech industry. But in this list, we only selected US-based companies operating in the tech industry.
