When having a talk with Jeff Foust, the senior staff writer of Space News a few days ago, Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts about the human’s future in the outer space. We may not live on the planets’ surface, but we will settle in “giant space colonies.”
Explaining his thoughts with Jeff Foust, Bezos said this was an easy-to-understand concept because human will spend a massive amount of energy and fuel travelling to the planets in the universe.
Many of us may wonder what’s going on with the Earth if almost all humans move to live in the space colonies. Bezos’s answer is some heavy industry from resource extraction to think mining may be set up in the other places of the Solar System.
He also mentioned “O’Neill cylinder” (also known as O’Neill colony), the masterpiece of Gerard O’Neill, who served as a physicist and introduced the design of the cylinder-shaped space settlement. In the model, two cylinders rotate in opposite directions to create gravity for new citizens from the Earth and reduce gyroscopic effects.
Similar to what Bezos said, the concept of space colonies once was described in many renowned sci-fi movies, such as “2001: A Space Odyssey” (produced in 1968).
Jeff Bezos and his workers at Blue Origin have made a lot of great efforts on developing a transportation service for humanity before we really move to space. One of their most ambitious plans until now is to set up a base to carry cargos on the Moon in the next four years, by 2023.
Regardless of all the above things, the Earth is still our great homeland.
