According to two unknown sources, as picked up by Reuters, Huawei has been in talks with Russia about the installation of the Aurora operating system on about 360,000 tablets in 2020.
The Chinese tech giant has reportedly been looking for a replacement for the Android OS of Google. This move comes after the US administration placed Huawei into its Entity List which includes many banned countries to approach the technologies and components from the United States.
The first source said to Reuters,
The Huawei representative said that the company has had a discussion with the Ministry of Communications of the Russian Federation. However, the specific details haven’t yet been uncovered. A few days ago, it reported that the revenue of its smartphones in 2019 could be reduced by appropriately 10 billion dollars due to the trade restrictions of the US.
Both Russia and Huawei are expected to bring the Aurora operating system to 360,000 tablets manufactured by the tech company itself in August 2020.
The second source revealed,
In terms of Aurora, it is the only operating system developed by Russia and no smartphones or devices are using it.
In addition, the Chinese smartphone maker has focused on developing its own operating system to ensure apps can continue working on its devices in case Google no longer provides tech support.
As the Aurora owner, Rostelecom is now the only contractor who purchases tablets to keep track of the country’s population census next October. Russia has had about 147 million citizens.
