Facebook Reportedly Aquiring A New Cybersecurity Company

Aiming to improve the security system, Facebook is reportedly trying to acquire a cybersecurity company. However, the name of the target has not been revealed yet.

After a recent hack that affected millions of Facebook user, the company now wants to prove to all of its users that increasing security is the top priority right now. As a result, Facebook has recently used a large amount of money for the purpose of acquiring a major cybersecurity company.

In an earlier post this Sunday, The Information stated that Facebook has contacted some cybersecurity companies, asking them about a possible acquisition. The source hasn’t provided detailed information about Facebook's targets but confirmed that the deal will be announced very soon, maybe by the end of this year.

Facebook's increase in reinforcing its security happens less than a month after an event that was called “the biggest security breach in Facebook’s history” happened. At first, the company announced the number of accounts affected is 50 million.

However, later study found out that about 29 million users' personal information had been stolen, including their phone numbers, email addresses, and recent activity logs.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Facebook itself suspected spammers who act as a digital marketing company might actually be the true cause of the hack.

The company has also announced its cooperation with the FBI, which has the requirement of Facebook not discussing who might be the attackers or whether they were choosing someone in particular to hack. However, Facebook did deny one theory of the hack had something which is related to the next US midterm elections.

A not- confirmed report recently has it that the breach was based on a small hole in the security system of Facebook. It is "view as" a feature, which allows people to see as the other people's view when they visit the owner's page. Attackers used code that was associated with the feature, enabled them to take over "access tokens". This access tokens can be used to take over people's Facebook accounts.
