According to the Bloomberg News, the Chinese Government has approved the schemes for the country’s first huge power storage with the aim to create clean energy output maximization and grid stability improvement.
The venture’s first phase will be carried out in Gansu’s northwestern province including the following cities Zhangye, Weiwu, Jiayuguan, and Jiuquan. The project requires a budget of 1.2 billion yuan which is equivalent to $174 million. The energy storage facility has the capability to generate the amount of 720-megawatt hours with four hours of storage duration. For comparison purposes, it is nearly two-thirds of Tesla’s Megapack battery storage’s capacity.

In an official statement from the Gansu Provincial Development & Reform Commission which was released on Tuesday, the facility is expected to be operated the following year.
The Gansu project expresses the efforts of China in balancing out renewably generated energy that often fluctuates as it depends on the amount of accessible sunlight or wind.
As for September, the amount of clean energy including solar and wind energy of the country reached 706 gigawatts. The curtailment rates of solar and wind were 2.9 percent and 7.7 percent respectively.
As stated by the provincial authority, the expansion of this project will be subject to the market conditions as well as the demands of the grid. When it is completed and ready to be operated, this Gansu energy storage facility project will be the biggest battery storage in China.
With this massive energy storage facility, Gansu citizens can rely on clean and renewable energy instead of fossil fuels when there is no sunlight or wind.
