Ever since its launch back in 2015, Apple Watch has always been designed as a fitness and health device which users can use to take care of their body and track their workouts. But Apple Watch has lacked one popular feature: sleep tracking.
Bloomberg reports that the Cupertino giant is now testing a new sleep tracking functionality. If it can meet the standards, it will be added to the Apple Watch as early as 2020.
Currently, on Apple Watch, third-party apps already offer a sleep tracking feature. But the device’s efficiency has always been hindered because of its relatively weak battery. Apple claims with one overnight charge; users can use the watch for a full day. But that is not enough for sleep tracking. Apple Watch’s competitors like Withings Steel Hybrid Smartwatch or Fitbit Versa can last for weeks before requiring a charge.
Mark Gurman from Bloomberg comments that if Apple wants to add a sleep tracking feature to its smartwatch, the company will have to improve the device’s battery life or allow sleep tracking to run in a low-power mode.
One sleep tracking feature is built into the device; Apple could expand its health-tracking features. At the moment, these features include automatic workout detection and electrocardiograms. By adding this to the list, it would be another reason for users to stay committed to their Apple Watch.
