Apple has just gained a patent for its virtual audio positioning, which may pave the way for more futuristic and game-changing audio applications.
This new invention is built on another patent Apple filed in December, which allows users to know where others are in a room by hearing them, facilitated by an advanced headphone tech. The new patent does exactly that but it has a clearer application that comes in the form of Apple speaker on MacBook.
As stated by 9to5Mac, what Apple uses here is the crosstalk canceling, which makes users think that the sounds are coming from somewhere else, not the loudspeakers themselves. The word crosstalk here means the sound waves that our ears hear from the right and left speaker’s channels.
As a result, what users hear are audio signals containing spatial cues, thus, users may have the feeling that the sounds are in space. This invention was first filed for a patent in 2018.
This technology has a bunch of practical applications. First, it can improve the feeling of presence, especially in sports broadcasts. Users may feel that they are right in the sports matches themselves.
Besides the MacBook, Apple Homepod lineup might also see the improvement, justifying the fact that it is more expensive than that of Google or Amazon. Apple Homepod price in India is around Rs. 22,300.
For business, conference calls’ quality will definitely see an enhancement. For entertainment, television shows and games are also benefited. The feeling might be more immersive with the tech in place.
With this improvement in sound quality, you might see yourself watch more content on your MacBook someday.
