See What's Inside Of Sony's New Console In This Teardown Video And If PS5 Price Is Justified

A month from now and the PlayStation 5 will officially be launched. Besides the PS5 price, Sony has recently released a teardown video showing us what goes on the inside of the console.

The video offers a better look at the PS5 ahead of its launch, as well as answering some questions regarding thermal performance, SSD upgradeability, and cooling potential.

Due to the great power, the PS5’s heatsink makes up for half of its size. It features a heat pipe for heat dissipating. According to Sony, the heatsink could work as effectively as a vapor chamber.

Liquid Metal TIM Ensures Stable Peak Performance

As we can see from the teardown video, Sony makes use of a liquid metal thermal interface material for more stable cooling performance. PS5’s chipset clocks at 3.5GHz and delivers lots of raw power, so the company prepares to handle lots of heat.

As mentioned above, the heatsink is in charge of the heat-dissipating. However, the chip and the heatsink contact generate thermal resistance so the interface material is there for conducting the heat between them.

Companies like Intel usually uses a cost-effective solution for this problem, which is to use the thermal paste to serve as TIM (thermal interface material). While the material is generally cheaper than many other choices, it is far from being the most effective for the job.

Liquid metal thermal interface material is more expensive, which partly explains the PS5 price but it does a way better job of dispersing heat.

Since Sony went for liquid metal TIM, PS5 is capable of delivering increased sustained peak performance.
