Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is the first smartwatch to come close to be a worthy rival of Apple Watch 4. They both offer a wide range of fitness and smart features that can meet all sorts of needs.
Here is our comparison of the two smartwatches to see which one fits you best:
Design And Display
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 shares the same two buttons and circular screen design with its predecessor.
When it comes to size, users can acquire the watch in either 44mm case/1.4-inch screen or 40mm/1.2-inch screen. With an aluminum body, the options for the rubber strap are Pink Gold, Aqua Black, and Cloud Silver. If you opt for stainless steel, the leather strap comes in Gold, Silver, and Black. No matter which body material you choose, the case will support interchangeable 20mm straps.
Apple Watch 4’s design leans more toward the square side with the digital crown on the right. The case size and material are the same as the Galaxy Watch Active 2.
The aluminum body comes in Space Gray, Gold, or Silver’ while the stainless steel version can be Gold, Silver, or Space Black. Apple offers a handful of metal and sporty straps to suit different preferences.
Another similarity between the two smartwatches is the fact that they are water-resistant to up to 50 meters. So in short, the most noticeable difference in the look of them is the shape of the screen.
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is available in 360 x 360 resolution only, while Apple Watch 4 offers two options, which are 324 x 394 resolution that comes with the 40mm model, and the 368 x 448 to pair with the 44mm model.
Fitness And Features
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 comes with two features that Apple Watch 4 either has the same thing or something similar.
The first function is the electrocardiogram (ECG) that allows the Galaxy Watch Active 2 to measure electrical and rhythm of wearer’s heart to identify things like AF (atrial fibrillation), which can lead to heart failure, heart clots, and strokes.
The same function can be found on the Apple Watch 4 and apart from these two companies, no other mainstream wearable device provider can offer it.
The other feature is the digital rotating bezel on the edge of the device which lets you run through the menu just by running your fingers along it. Basically, it is the digital version of the physical dial users like so much on Samsung’s wearables.
Apple Watch Series 4 does not have this exact feature but it offers something quite similar, which is the digital crown to browse through the watch.
Both of them have LTE, great news for those who want to leave the large and cumbersome phone at home.
Other similarities include NFC, a heart rate monitor, GPS, and fitness features.
OS And Power
One of the biggest disparities between the two watches is the OS. Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 has Tizen whereas Apple Watch 4 is powered by watchOS. This means if you consider the latter, you can only have the maximum benefit if you also own an iPhone as it cannot work with Android. If compatibility is what concerns you, Tizen is a better option as it is compatible with both.
Another dissimilarity of these two OSs is the AI assistant wearers are able to conjure. For Apple Watch 4, the choice is, of course, Siri; whereas you will have the aid of Bixby on the other. For now, Apple’s assistant seems to win over its competitor but Bixby is improving fast.
Under the hood, Samsung’s wearable is powered by a dual-core Exynos 9110 chipset, onboard storage of 4GB, and RAM of either 1.5GB or 768MB.
Apple Watch 4, on the other hand, features a dual-core Apple S4 chipset and inbuilt storage of 16GB. We have not heard anything on the amount of RAM.
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 comes with a battery of 230mAh that is paired with the 40mm model; and 340mAh if you opt for the 44mm version.
For now, Apple has not said anything about the capacity of the battery, but many people believe that it can sustain the device for up to 18 hours.
Availability And Price
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 will be available from the 27th of September with the price starts at $279.99 (roughly Rs. 20,226) for the 40mm configuration, and for the 44mm version, users may have to pay at least $299 (around Rs. 21,600). No news on the release date and price of the watch outside of the US has been announced yet.
The Apple Watch 4 has been around for some time now for the price of $399 in the U.S for the 40mm version; the 44mm model comes with the cost of $429. In India, the former configuration is retailed at Rs. 40,900 while the latter will set you back Rs. 43,900. Whatever version you choose, the wearable from Apple is significantly more costly than that of Samsung’s with most of the same or similar features.
Takeaway
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 comes really close to be a solid alternative to Apple Watch 4, so if you want all the features an Apple’s wearable can offer but does not have an iPhone, or do not want to stretch your budget too much, the one from Samsung is right up your alley.
Samsung’s offer seems to be less premium and focus more on fitness. No watch can be said to be generally better than the other because that decision is based on the preferences of each user.
