Jio Glass was launched at Jio’s 43rd Annual General Meeting. The company’s new 3D glass is powered by wireless and cellular networks via a smartphone.
India’s market for such a device is still a niche so there is a huge opportunity for companies to woo users and Jio didn’t waste the chance to launch its own smart glass.
What Is Jio Glass
Jio Glass is a Mixed Reality solution and currently Jio’s most innovative product.
While the company did briefly explain how the glasses would help with education and businesses, it has said nothing about how they work.
With Jio Glass, users can create a virtual room with the participants of others, which can serve as a meeting or a class. Other abilities include showcasing presentations like graphs.
What Is Jio Glass Price
Google and Facebook are the firsts to enter the market but their pricing scheme puts the tech out of the reach of most people.
Besides, none of Google’s Microsoft’s, or Facebook’s products are available in India so Reliance Jio is the first to conquer the local market.
The COVID-19 pandemic calls for innovation as social distancing is enforced to keep people safe. But this will happen only if Jio can keep the Jio glass price down.
Last year, Facebook launched the cheapest pair of glasses at the price of $185, roughly Rs 14,000.
A pair of Hololens will set you back $2,500 and Jio glass price in India is believed to be above Rs. 10,000.
However, if Jio goes for the price of Rs. 5,000, it will do very well on the Indian market.
When Will Jio Glass Launch
Jio Glass was launched at the company’s 43rd Annual General Meeting but it has said nothing about an exact date when we can see the smart glasses on the market. Many reports claim they would be released in 2021.
Five Key Things To Know About The Jio Glass
Firstly, Jio Glass appears to resemble Google Glass but with a chunkier and bulkier body. However, in reality, its analogy comes closer to the Spectacles 3 of Snapchat.
They look trendy and robust but we will have to wait and see them in reality to assess their practicality. From what we can make out when they were launched, Jio Glass features a thick temple with multiple buttons for different functionalities.
Secondly, the company didn’t provide any information on the processor but it did say the pair of glasses can run as many as 25 apps all while providing directional and spatial XR audio.
The pair of glasses features two microphones for users to communicate. The camera sitting on the bridge of Jio Glass will capture photos and send them to any video conferences. The images can also be saved to the smartphone paired with the glass.
Thirdly, the glass utilizes mixed reality for remote communication and video conferences. What you may expect are 2D avatars from the video feed and 3D holographic images.
The avatars will appear right in front of the users’ eyes in a virtual environment such as a conference room or an office. While they are in the virtual environment of Jio Glass, the participants will be able to share files and make presentations.
Fourthly, the glass can be used to create a virtual classroom for online teaching. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced schools to shut down all over the country, ed-tech companies and the education boards are working to make online learning easier.
Jio Glass can provide virtual demonstrations, for example, a tour to a geographical location all while hosting as many participants as the host wants. Jio has launched its own education platform called Embibe and it will be integrated with the glass.
Fifthly and lastly, Jio Glass has support for 25 apps for online collaboration and video conferencing. Voice commands for most functions are available but there are still buttons.
A prime example of the voice command is when the user wants to call somebody, they simply need to say “Hello, Jio, call [name 1], and [name 2].” This function is viable given the glass is paired with a phone or connected to Wi-Fi.
Reliance Jio has said nothing about the Jio glass cost and release date. The full list of features and specifications haven’t been revealed either.
