The New York Times revealed a truth that robots have suffered from brutal attacks by human more than ever. Some cases include a hitchhiking robot or hitchBOT being beaten, or when people smashed a sex robot or used a baseball bat to hit an educational robot.
These cases are not unique. This seemingly shows that, along with human’s support for robot development, we are also looking for many different ways against automatons. The relationship between humans and robots in the future has been partly uncovered.
Economic anxiety is supposed to be a major reason behind the violence: people can be replaced by robots, and the unemployment rate may be significantly increased.
The explanation is rather convincing; however, the Times also points out another reason: the brutal tendency passing down from ancestry has made us against outlanders instinctively.
“Frankenstein syndrome” is a term the female psychologist chooses to explain the human’s violence against robots. When seeing something both similar and different to us in many aspects, we often feel fearful. Talking to the Times, Wykowska gave an example of her colleague introducing robots to a kindergarten.
However, everything seemed not too bad. She said to the Times. Considering the positive point, when the kids heard that these robots had their own names, same as humans, they stopped hitting and conducting other brutal attacks.
