At launch, the camera came at a price of $3,899, equivalent to Rs 2.85 lakh. However, the official price of the EOS R5 in India is Rs 3,39,995.

Canon EOS R5 features

In terms of video, the Canon EOS R5 allows for 8K raw internal video recording at 30 frames per second as well as 8K internal video recording at 30 frames per second in4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ or 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265 both).

Users can also choose to internally oversample 8K footage to generate more detailed 4K footage. In addition, the camera lets users record 4K videos at a frame rate of up to 120 frames per second in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265). It can produce 4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ output or 4:2:2 10-bit in Canon Log through HDMI at 4K resolution and 60fps frame rate.

When it comes to sensor and AF, the Canon EOS R5 features a 45MP full-frame CMOS sensor along with the DIGIC X image sensor, which was also used in the EOS-1D X Mark III.

Besides, the camera also has the Dual Pixel CMOS AF II that promises just 0.5 seconds of focusing time. According to Canon, the camera can focus in low light levels down to 6EV, equivalent to moonlight.

Eye and face detection AF modes have been improved as well because the AL algorithms have been adjusted to maintain the subject’s sharpness when they move unpredictably in a shallow depth of field. On top of that, the AF tracking mode from Canon is now able to recognize cats, birds, and dogs in the movie and still modes.

The mechanical shutter on the R5 allows for shooting at full resolution and up to 12fps. Or users can activate the electronic shutter to shoot at 20fps.

The R5 is the first EOS camera to include 5-axis IBIS (in-body image stabilization). The IBIS system in the R5 camera is designed to work alongside the IS system in the RF lenses. This combination can offer up to 8 stops of stabilization.

Canon EOS R5 review

Compared with the EOS R, the EOS R5 is beefier, thicker, and heavier, but the weight is distributed evenly, making it feel more balanced in the hand and better matching larger RF lenses.

While the top of the R5 looks a lot like that of the R, the difference is in its rear. First of all, the M-Fn touch bar has been replaced with a joystick and the AF-ON at a more traditional position. Meanwhile, the individual D-pad buttons have been replaced with a control wheel.

However, the R5 still keeps that articulating touchscreen from the RP and EOS R. And it’s not as sturdy as the 5D though it still features the same weather sealing, make sure you won’t drop it.

With its new 2,130mAh battery, the EOS R5 has 14% more battery capacity.

There’s one problem, the camera will heat up internally when it shooting videos above the 4K 30p standard, the higher the quality, the faster it will overheat. So it’s necessary to have recording limits if you want to avoid this.

If you are willing to deal with overheating issues, feel free to enjoy the 8K video quality, which is incredibly rich and detailed. But the line-skipped 4K video produced by this camera feels a little dull.

As be seen from samples, 4K 60fps and 4K 120fps videos are crystal clear thanks to the IBIS system that allows for shooting without a gimbal in most situations. However, keep in mind that you need enough hardware to store that much data; unless you use a CFexpress card, beware of the SD card’s capacity.

Apart from some limitations with video recording, other things about this camera is just as great as you can expect.

It generates stunning 45MP photos with crisp detail that may not match the pure resolution of the 5DS/R, but still look really good. Though, the dynamic range and ISO performance of the R5 are not as good as those of the 5D Mark IV.

As a pleasant surprise, with its 8K video, the R5 allows for 35MP Frame Grab, which has been used in other cameras but not as good as this camera. All you have to do is scrubbing through the 8K footage on the rare of the camera, pinpointing the desired frame as a still, and pushing a button to export a 35MP picture.

One of the best things about this camera is the new Animal AF, its new Deep Learning algorithm helps you do all the work. You just need to point the lens at an animal and the camera will recognize it, track it, and even focus on its eyes. You don’t even have to choose the focus point or touch the joystick, simply set the R5 to ‘Subject: Animals,’ then stick it in C-AF and wait for an animal. The feature works on various animals including birds, cats, dogs, monkeys, fish, turtles, etc.

Another impressive thing to mention here is the Dual Pixel RAW tech that uses both photodiodes on one pixel. This technology was used on the 5D Mark IV and is now far more mature on the EOS R5.

Canon EOS R5 vs Canon EOS R6

And to compare Canon EOS R5 vs EOS R6, it all comes down to the targeted users. In other words, each of them is designed for a different purpose. While the R5 is made for photographers who want 45MP stills and 8K videos, the R6 is more of a general-purpose camera that has a 20MP sensor with a 4K limit for video recording.

In terms of pricing, the Canon EOS R5 price is Rs 3,39,995 in India, this is also the Canon EOS R5 lowest price as it’s just for the body, lenses not included. On the other hand, the R6 comes at a price of Rs 2,15,995 in India.
