While AMD’s CPU business has been gaining great success, the graphics card business has never been in a worse situation. Nvidia has dominated this area for years with much higher revenue than its AMD. From the GTX 1000 until RTX 2000, AMD failed to make even a graphics card that can compete with the GTX 1080 Ti ỏ RTX 2080 Ti in the high-end segment.
However, with the new announcement on October 28, we can say that AMD has finally got back in the game.
Better gaming performance by pairing the Ryzen 5000 CPU and Rx 6000
In the recent event, AMD revealed three GPUs including the RX 6800, RX 6800 XT, and RX 6900 XT, all of which are based on the newest RDNA 2 architecture that’s also used on the PS5 and Xbox Series X. notable, the RX 6000 is AMD’s first to support Ray Tracing, eliminating Nvidia’s dominance in the last few years.
Though the RX 6000 still users GDDR6 storage, AMD has found a way to increase the bandwidth by integrating the Infinity Cache technology used in the Ryzen 5000 CPU. Thanks to the 128MB cache, the bandwidth of the GDDR6 storage is much larger than the standard GDDR6X used on Nvidia’s Xnxubd RTX 3000 series.
At the same time, AMD also announced the new Smart Memory Access that helps users make use of the Ryzen 5000 CPU and the RX 6000 GPU. When enabled, this feature will have full access to the GPU’s memory, increase the data transfer speed between the CPU and GPU, boosting gaming performance.
RX 6800 XT: The same power as the RTX 3080, but cheaper and consumes less energy
Among the three names revealed during the event, the $649 Radeon RX 6800 XT will compete directly with Xnxubd Nvidia’s RTX 3080. It promises better gaming performance compared with its rival while costing $50 less. Specifically, the RX 6800 XT comes with 16GB GDDR6 storage, game frequency of 2015 Mhz, boost frequency of 2250 Mhz, Peak Single Precision Compute Performance of 20.74 TFLOPs, and 72 ray accelerators.
From the Benchmark scores comparison between the RTX 3080 and RX 6800 XT at 1440p resolution and 4K resolution, the performance of AMD’s candidate is better than that of the RTX 3080 in some titles such as Borderlands 3, Battlefield, Forza Horizon 4, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
In games like Gears 5, Shadow of the Tom Raider, and Doom Eternal, the AMD RX 6800 XT offers the same performance as the RTX 3080. This shows that after years, AMD has finally caught up with Nvidia in terms of performance in the high-end segment.
RX 6800: Beats the RTX 2080 Ti
While the RX 6800 XT rivals Nvidia in the high-end segment, the RX 6800 competes with the RTX 3070 in the mid-range segment as well as directly competes with the RTX 2080 Ti that was once the most powerful graphics card. With a 16.17 TFLOPs performance, the RX 6800 features 60 compute units, 16GB of GDDR6 storage, a gaming frequency of 1815 Mhz, and a boost frequency of 2105 Mhz.
Like the RX 6800 XT, the RX 6800 outperforms the Xnxubd Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti. Specifically, the GPU has a higher frame rate than the RTX 2080 Ti at 1440p and 4K resolutions in some titles like Call of Duty: MW, BF5, Gears of War 5, and Doom Eternal.
Though AMD hasn’t revealed the Benchmark scores of the RX 6800 compared with the RTX 3070, we can expect that AMD’s candidate will rival the one from Nvidia. However, the RX 6800 XT is $80 more expensive than the RTX 3070.
RX 6900 XT: The most powerful beast ever created by AMD
While Nvidia has the Xnxubd RTX 3090 as the most expensive and powerful GPU, AMD responds with the RX 6900 XT. On the paper, this graphics card keeps the gaming frequency and boost frequency as the Rx 6800 XT, along with the 16GB GDDR6, but it has 80 compute units instead of 70.
As a result, when you put the RTX 3090 and RX 6900 XT in comparison, AMD’s candidate delivers better performance in some titles, showing how powerful the RDNA 2 architecture is. Besides, the RX 6900 XT is more attractive due to a lower price than the RTX 3090 with a $500 difference for the same power.
The Radeon RX 6800 XT and RX 6800 will go on sale on November 18 while the Radeon RX 6900 XT will be available on December 8.
