COVID-19 might have taken the lives of thousands of people but in some parts of the world, it has actually saved lives.
According to Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist of Texas Tech, the Coronavirus has reduced significantly the use of fossil fuels in Italy and China, thus lowering the level of air pollution.
She said that each year, 9 million lives are lost due to air pollution, which comes from the use of fossil fuel.
The reduced level of pollution has been saving lives in China, COVID-19’s country of origin.
Marshall Burke of Stanford University, COVID-19 outbreak has caused an economic disruption in China, which reduce the amount of air pollution in the country. This will likely save 20 times more human lives than the number of those China lost to the Coronavirus.
He estimated that during the two months COVID-19 wreaking havoc in China, it had saved the lives of 73,000 people older than 70 and 4,000 children under five years old.
According to Forbes, the ESA (European Space Agency) recorded a reduced amount of nitrogen dioxide pollution in Northern Italy when the country entered a total lockdown.
However, that is not to say that the Coronavirus pandemic is some sort of blessing in disguise for humanity. Hayhoe said that industrial production will be back on track when the pandemic is under control; however, she hoped that it has showed people a whole new way to live.
