India has a grand plan to send humans to space and that ambition calls for a new aspect to be developed in the medical field.
When in space, human bodies have to endure all kinds of psychological and physiological challenges that can affect astronauts’ well-being and their ability to do their jobs.
K. Kasturirangan, former ISRO Chairman, said that yoga might be able to help.
At the 32nd convocation at Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, K. Kasturirangan emphasized the important role of practicing yoga in space to stay healthy. He said that even Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian in space, did Yoga during his stay.

Exercise is the answer to some of the most common issues people get, including space motion sickness and bone loss. India has its own valuable heritage, yoga, which can counter the negative impact of isolation on astronauts as well as keep their neck and core strength.
Experts in other countries have also praised the positive effect of yoga in helping astronauts overcome the health issues they get in space.
In most countries with a developed space industry, exercises for astronauts usually focus on bone density, endurance, and muscle strength.
Dr. Douglas Chang at the University of California said that low back pain is common among astronauts and yoga could be a promising solution for this condition. It can also help with easing the effect of poor mobility and spaceflight-associated lumbar stiffness.
However, further study is needed to prove the extent of yoga effect on astronauts’ health.
