Wuhan was considered ground zero of COVID-19, being the first country to be put under lockdown. But now, it seems like the capital of Hubei, China, has overcome the nightmare as thousands of people gathered at Maya Beach Water Park for a new electronic music festival over the weekend.
And at this party, no one wore a mask and followed the social distancing rule.
At the moment, in many countries around the world, such a large party is something that no one thinks of. There are over 21 million confirmed COVID-19 cases globally and the number keeps rising every day.
But in Wuhan, a city of 11 million people, life seems to have returned to its normal state since the lifting of the 76-day lockdown at the beginning of April. Since mid-May, the city hasn’t recorded any new cases.
The Maya Beach Water Park in Wuhan reopened in late June but sever rains and flooding prevented people from visiting the water park. In early August, the number of visitors was only half of what was recorded in previous years.
But now, the park welcomes an average of 15,000 visitors on weekends after receiving discounts on the fare.
Wuhan was where the pandemic originated from. The city recorded the first case of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in December 2019. The city’s number of cases accounted for 60% of China’s total cases.
On January 23, 2020, the whole city was put under lockdown to prevent the spread of the virus. All vehicles leaving the city including planes, trains, and buses stopped working while the highways were blocked.
Even the city’s public transportations were gone. Residents were banned from leaving their homes, even to get necessities. Soon after that, other cities in Hubei issued similar strict regulations.
Drastic measures seemed to help China successfully control the virus. However, the virus reemerged from mid-May with 6 new cases recorded. In Wuhan, over 6.5 million tests were conducted in 9 days to control the virus from spreading.
