Many of us are worried about our jobs in the future because of computerization, robots, and AI - which are evolving in leaps and bounds. Thanks to cutting-edge developments in science and technology, they’re now equipped with enough power to fulfill a slew of complicated tasks, but this also comes at a cost - we're under threats of being unemployed.
According to Business Insider, Microsoft is planning to lay off its editorial staff and journalists and replace them with AI tools, which will be responsible for picking and aggregating articles for MSN.com alongside other Microsoft News apps as well as platforms.
A company’s spokesperson claimed that these decisions didn’t appear to be any sort of response to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Depending on the business performance, some places will receive additional investment while others will have to see re-deployment.
As reported, about 50 contracted editors in Microsoft’s SANE division (Search, Ads, News, and Edge) have lost their jobs to AI. They were employed to collect stories and news from more than 1,000 publishing partners, such as Business Insider, Fox News, The New York Times, USA Today, and more.
Contracted editors were paid around 35$ hourly. In fact, these editors mainly worked on selecting articles, not original stories. After being re-formatted to suit Microsoft’s standards, the chosen articles will be shared throughout the company’s platforms.
