WhatsApp Co-Founder Advises People To Delete Facebook

WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton appeared as a speaker at Stanford University earlier this week, where he urged students to delete their Facebook accounts.

Earlier this week, Brian Acton, WhatsApp co-founder, during his public appearance as a speaker at Stanford University, where he discussed his decision to sell his firm to Facebook and advised students to stop using Facebook and delete their accounts.

Buzzfeed News reported Acton spoke at a course for undergraduates named Computer Science 181 along with She++’s founder Ellora Israni who is an ex-Facebook employee.

During his talk, Acton talked about why he decided to sell WhatsApp to Facebook as well as why he left.

Acton also criticizes Facebook’s move to prioritize monetization over the privacy of users.

He mentioned how major social media and tech firms like Google and Apple have failed to moderate their content. He said:

In Oct 2014, WhatsApp co-founder sold his company to Facebook for $19 billion. Three years later, he left the company following the decision to allow ads on WhatsApp.

This is not the first time for Acton to call for people to stop using Facebook. The same thing happened last year after the Cambridge Analytica Scandal broke out.

According to Marketplace, in 2018, the number of Facebook users leaving the platform has reached millions.

And people are looking for other methods to keep in touch. When Facebook and Instagram suffered from outages last week, Telegram, an encrypted-messaging app, has welcomed three million new users.
