Just recently, a coffee shop in Germany reopened and welcomed customers again after a temporary shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Noticeably, the store has given each guest a “social-distancing hat” to keep everyone apart, according to the guidelines of WHO.
Last week, coffee shop owners in Schwerin, a city in northern Germany, were allowed to resume business after the lockdown order was lifted. While people could begin to meet each other and enjoy the fresh air outside, the coffee shops still need to operate under the motto of practicing social-distancing.
Instead of drawing marks on the floor to keep everyone apart like many other places, the owner of this coffee shop gives each guest a hat with two colorful foam swimming buoys attached to it.
To celebrate this unforgettable event, the owner Jaqueline Rother posted a picture of her customers sitting together and chatting with a new unique hat on top of their hats. After being posted on the shop’s Facebook page, it received a lot of support from Internet users.
Sharing with CNN, the 52-year-old owner said that after the restriction order was lifted, many people flocked to coffee shops and bars to enjoy their favorite drink. She was quite surprised that the picture she posted on Facebook attracted so much attention.
Jaqueline, in an interview with a local TV channel, said that this was a perfect solution to get everyone to practice social-distancing. And it looked interesting. She added that all her guests found the idea interesting.
According to Jaqueline, normally a coffee shop or a bakery has around 36 tables inside and 20 tables outside when the weather is warm enough. However, due to social-distancing rules, her store needs to reduce the number of tables to only 12 tables inside and 8 tables outside. Before the pandemic broke out, each table was only 80 centimeters apart.
During the lockdown period, many coffee shops were still open but only accept takeaway orders.
Germany has lifted a number of restrictions after chancellor Merkel said the first phase of the pandemic had ended. However, she also warned that there might be a sudden spike in new cases if people stopped adhering to social-distancing measures.
As per statistics from John Hopkins University, the world has recorded more than 4.6 million cases of COVID-19 and more than 312,000 deaths. In particular, Germany has more than 176,000 people infected and nearly 8,000 deaths.
