With the Coronavirus outbreak affecting India and other countries around the world, people have become panic, trying to protect themselves.
The virus is believed to have come from Wuhan’s Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, which is a trading place for wildlife. On 23 January, to prevent the virus from spreading, the Chinese authorities put the city under lockdown. Some airlines have also suspended their flights to mainland China.
After the disease broke out, people started blaming the Chinese for consuming odd creatures such as bats, frogs, and snakes. And according to researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the genome sequenced taken from seven patients were reportedly 96% identical to coronavirus from bats.
Director of the Center for Infection and Immunity, Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, Professor W. Ian Lipkin was studying the novel Coronavirus’ effects in China. Back in 2002, when the SARS epidemic broke out, he was also in China.
In an interview with CNN, he talked about Covid-19 and how the consumption of wild animals led to the outbreak.
He said:
He further added that another factor contributing to the spreading of deadly diseases was climate change. The change in temperatures has now allowed diseases to spread to places where it couldn’t even survive previously.
He explained:
With more and more confirmed cases globally, researchers are racing to find a vaccine for the deadly virus. Just recently, 15,000 medicinal molecules have been paid by the foundation to be shipped to a Rega Institute for Medical Research in Leuven, Belgium from the Scripps Research Institute in California for testing as a potential cure to the deadly virus.
