As Coronavirus is spreading globally, WHO (World Health Organization) had also warned people about the spread of fake news which is called “infodemic.” WHO defined this as information overload. While some information is accurate, some are not, which makes it difficult for people to find reliable guidance and trustworthy sources when they need it.
While researchers around the world are frantically working to find a vaccine, the flooded of misinformation only makes the matter worse.
Yogi Adityanath, chief minister of Utter Pradesh has suggested that regularly practicing yoga could cure and prevent deadly diseases.
On March 1, Yogi participated in the inauguration of the International Yoga Festival held in Rishikesh. According to Yogi, people who practice yoga regularly would be mentally and physically fit, thus they don’t need to fear diseases like Coronavirus.
He said:
The chief minister then added that in order to stay fit, space travelers would have yogic kriyas and pranayama as their very first training.
At another event in Aurangabad where he inaugurated a vaccination campaign for kids to prevent recurrence of acute encephalitis and Japanese encephalitis syndrome, Yogi said that flu wasn’t a disease and it was the change in weather that people caught a cold.
He added that people needed not to be panic despite the spread of the Coronavirus.
This isn’t the first time for officials to be accused of spreading misinformation about the deadly virus.
Back in January, the Ministry of AYUSH published a health advisory advocating the use of Unani medicines and homeopathic products to eliminate Coronavirus.
The president of Hindu Mahasabha, Swami Chakrapani, was another one to make an unconfirmed claim saying cow dung and cow urine could stop Coronavirus’ effect.
