Polishing your skills with advanced rummy strategies can help you have greater command over the rummy. Among many strategies, the most effective one is using maths, probability in particular, to increase your chances of winning. It is a perfect example of how using multiple maths concepts in a game. The concept of Permutation and Combination and Probability Theory are what you should understand to thrive in rummy.

Rumm Maths
Maths is a great way to increase your chance of winning in a rummy game.

In an Indian Rummy game, you can predict the type of cards that your opponents are currently having if you have a good understanding of probability. With that, you will have a significant advantage over your opponents and get a better outcome.

You and your opponents have used two decks of cards and each player got 13 cards in the rummy game. You can use maths to calculate the probability of you getting Jokers. For example, you and your friend are playing the rummy game and you are having more than 4 Jokers, it is safe to assume that your friend doesn’t have any Jokers or fewer Jokers than you. 10 Jokers - 8 Wild and 2 Printed Jokers are used in the rummy game and you are having five of them, you can easily make an assumption that the other ones are either in your opponents’ hands or in the Closed Deck. Moreover, it is highly unlikely that there is an opponent that has the same number of jokers like you.

Here is how Indian math can help you in rummy.

Out of the 106 cards, there will be 104 cards that are in either black or red colours. Therefore, if you are having many black coloured cards -- Clubs and Spades, you can safely assume that other players have more red-coloured cards. Hence, you should not discard the red-coloured ones in the initial moves as other players can use those cards to make a sequence. Similarly, you are having many odd-numbered cards, you can assume that other players have more odd-numbered cards. Now, you can see how understanding the probability can give you a better insight into other players’ cards.

Using maths and probability can help you to predict which cards you opponents in your hands and what cards you should keep.

The concept of connecting cards is another useful tip that can help you get a better win rate in the rummy game. The concept can be explained with the following example. If you are currently having a group of cards like 6 and 5 of Hearts, there is a higher chance of you forming sequences with cards like 7 and 4 of Hearts. However, if you are holding in hands a group of 10 and 4 of Spades, it is highly unlike that you will be able to form a sequence with those two cards. Therefore, you should discard those types of cards that have a lower chance of forming a sequence.

How Probability is useful for playing Rummy

A standard deck has a total of 52 cards in four suits (♣ Clubs, ♦ Diamonds, ♠ Spades, and ♥ Hearts), each of them has 13 cards. Each suite has a total of four face cards (A, K, Q, J), so the equal probability of getting one out of the 52 cards is:

The Probability of picking a favorable card → (1/52)

The Probability of not picking a favorable card → (1-1/52)

You can see that the probability of getting a favorable card is lower than getting an unfavorable one. It also proves that rummy is a skill-based game, and changing the outcome of a rummy game all depends on the skills of the players.
