This Woman's Body Naturally Brews And Urinates Alcohol

A woman who lives in Pittsburgh has recently been documented as the first person whose body naturally brew alcohol from the fermentation of yeast in the bladder.

The experts call this “urinary auto-brewery syndrome” and “bladder fermentation syndrome.” It is similar to another syndrome which causes patients to get drunk only by ingesting carbohydrates.

The 61-year-old patient went to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre Presbyterian Hospital to apply for a liver transplant. The doctors later suspected that he was an alcoholic after urine tests were all positive.

The patient later denied having consumed any kind of alcohol and she showed no sign of intoxication while at the medical center even though there was a high level of ethanol in her urine.

After running more tests, the experts confirmed that her condition is the result of yeast fermenting sugar in her bladder.

The doctors tried to eliminate the yeast from her body using antifungal treatments but their effort failed, which is suspected to be the result of the 61-year-old patient’s poorly controlled diabetes.

In light of the discovery of her urinary auto-brewery syndrome, the doctors said her request for a liver transplant had been reconsidered. However, they shared no further information on the patient and her well-being.

When the team conducted research into the case, they found out about reports of similar incidents with alcohol production found in urine. One of the previous cases involves the syndrome being discovered after the patient died and another is an experiment performed in a test tube.

The doctors also warned that it was easy to overlook this syndrome so clinicians should always pay close attention to test results and medical documents, as wells as investigate when incompatibility occurs.
