Toyota has built its reputation for creating reliable cars on Earth; now it has plans to conquer the terrain outside of this planet.

Toyota's Moon Rover is expected to have six wheels

The company is aiming to recreate the 6-wheel vehicle used to travel on the Moon, similar to the vehicle in Duncan Jones's Moon in 2009. On March 12, the automaker said about a cooperative plan with the Japanese space agency (JAXA) to produce the moon rover and bring it into space in the next ten years.

JAXA and Toyota are now in the early stages of building ideas for this vehicle, so there is no design or name yet. However, scientists have decided on specific characteristics of this car. Both producers and space agencies want to build a car strong enough to travel long distances on the moon. At the same time, it must use clean energy. Toyota once told the press that they are aiming to move a range of more than 6,200 miles. That means that only 572 miles away of the total circumference of the moon, which is twice the width of the United States.

The Tesla Model S is currently at the forefront of vehicles using clean materials that can run within 335 miles. The number that JAXA and Toyota expect the rover moon to travel 18 times compared to the range of Model S.

The final improvement of Toyota's battery fuel technology is bringing some feasible hopes for this plan. Typically, Toyota Mirai 2019's ability to travel long distances of 312 miles EPA proved it. These battery cells are used entirely by hydrogen from Toyota, so it does not bring any toxic air to the environment. One favorable factor for this fuel source is that some areas of the Moon have hydrogen gas, so refueling is much easier than bringing fossil fuels into space.

Shigeki Terashi, executive vice president of Toyota, said that the fuel cells they are using have a high energy density and only emits water, so it is extremely clean and suitable for the project objectives.

Toyota also knows more about the size of this moon rover. It is expected to be nearly the size of two Toyota HiAces. However, the inside may not yet be two astronauts; sometimes it may be 4 in an emergency. To ensure the safety of astronauts as well as the work schedule of expedition missions, JAXA has come up with plans for the armored exterior of the car to combat the harshness and pressure on the moon.

Like many agencies and companies around the world, the study and introduction of inventions on the moon are seen as stepping stones toward the goal of arriving at Mars by humans. China, NASA, Isareal, SpaceX and India have continually launched their innovations and technology to explore moon technology to prepare for plans to advance to Mars shortly.

NASA's Lunar Orbital Platform Gateway construction plan is in its early stages and is expected to begin construction in 2024. It is expected to be an astronaut's checkpoint when they come to the Moon. Moreover, it has also contracted the means to take tourists to the Port.

If everything goes as planned, JAXA will put this car on the moon by 2024. And if it works well, the future is not far away; people will settle scattered throughout the moon.
