The mandatory lockdown has left many Indians with too much time to spend and a few things to do. This is why the traffic to TikTok’s shitposts is increasing rapidly.
While most of the posts are just lip-synced versions of popular songs, some are really dangerous as they spread misinformation. Among those stupid enough to spread unproven claims regarding the pandemic, at least one has received the consequence he deserves.
A TikTok user in Madhya Pradesh, who said we should not believe the effect of face masks and put our trust on God instead, has recently tested positive for CO.VID-19.
The 25-year-old man is among the first citizens of the Sagar district in Madhya Pradesh to be confirmed to carry the virus. In a video, a man was asked to put a face mask on but he rejected it saying that we should believe God, not a piece of cloth.
The man is now in a stable condition and can be seen in other videos to wear a mask while lying on his hospital bed.
It is easy thinking that the man is paying for his ignorance but his case represents a more dangerous trend on the Internet, which is fake news catching on like wildfire and affecting people’s senses of security.
While many may say that his remark on face masks is false, it is no denying that even some health experts are skeptical about their use in stopping the spread of the Co.ro.na.virus. Some even advise people to avoid stocking them so that health workers have enough when they need it.
So this incident is more like a warning sign of what misinformation can do in this trying time of a global pandemic.
