This Nurse Survived All Three Shipwrecks, Including The Titanic

Violet Jessop could never predict that she would experience three historic shipwrecks that would later be recorded in history books.

In the 1900s, luxury cruise ships became extremely popular. Many people were willing to pay a ton of money to get on one and enjoyed a peaceful life at sea. Therefore, jobs for this new tourism industry were also extremely attractive. That was how Violet Jessop began her journey as an attendant on a cruise ship.

However, this woman could never predict that she would experience three historic shipwrecks that would later be recorded in history books.

Violet Jessop
Violet was born in 1887 in Argentina.

Violet was born in 1887 in Argentina. When she was 16 years old, her father passed away, an event that prompted her family to move to England. Just a few years later, at the age of 23, she decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps and became an attendant on a cruise ship.

Her journey started with the British shipping company called White Star Line, and more specifically, the RMS Olympic ship. This used to be the largest ocean liner in the world.

Her journey started with the RMS Olympic ship.

During Violet’s first trip, the RMS Olympic collided with the battleship HMS Hawke.

Initially, Violet was a little hesitant to join the Olympic journey, mainly due to bad weather conditions and her fear. But after trying to decide to board the ship, on September 20, 1910, the two ships clashed with no casualties, luckily. In fact, both ships were safely back at port.

However, the damage caused to the Olympic was much greater than reported. Its repair costs were a whopping $75,000.

The damage caused to the Olympic was much greater than reported.

The crash turned into a financial disaster for the British shipping company. In order to quickly repair and put Olympic back into operation, the company was forced to postpone the completion of its other ship, the Titanic. The Olympic repair team took many of the Titanic's materials for use, even the propeller.

After the Olympic accident, Violet was not excited to join the cruise on the new Titanic, which was delayed compared to originally planned. But in the end, she was persuaded by her friends.

She was persuaded to join the crew of the Titanic by her friends.

And just 5 days after setting sail, on April 10, 1912, the Titanic crashed. Violet was out of the cabin and immediately ran to deck following the collision, where she helped many women and children onto lifeboats. When it was her turn, she boarded Lifeboat 16, carrying a lost baby.

With the rest of the survivors, she was saved the next morning, after eight hours of waiting in the ocean. She said she had held the baby during that time. It was not until after they were saved that a woman approached and took the baby away without saying a word.

Four years after the Titanic's tragedy, Violet worked as a nurse for the British Red Cross. At this time, the HMHS Britannic, the third and largest of the three Olympic-class ships of the White Star Line, was repaired to turn into a hospital at sea.

But the ship was on the Aegean Sea, an explosion happened suddenly. Violet jumped into the water but was sucked under the ship, receiving a pretty strong blow to the head.

Of the 1,066 passengers, 30 did not safely exit the sinking ship. Decades later, Violet went to see a doctor to complain about her severe headaches. She was told that a skull fracture, which she received while escaping from the old ship, was the cause.

Violet Jessop 2
Violet continued working on the big ships until she retired at the age of 63.

Despite all the difficulties and near-death experiences, Violet was not discouraged and continued on board the big ships until she retired at the age of 63.

Years later, she received a mysterious call from an unknown person who asked if she was the woman who saved a baby in the sinking of the Titanic.

When she said it was herself, the caller replied, "I am that baby", and hung up.
