The COVID-19 pandemic has allowed companies to come up with various products for personal hygiene as well as disinfecting our surroundings. We can mention touchless doorbells, automatic detection systems, hands-free door openers, etc. And this time, Tweaq, a company from Switzerland has invented the world’s first smart door handle that can clean itself.

The product is called Touch 1 door handle. It can replace existing door handles, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. Around the door handle is a ring running across the width of the handle. Every time someone touches the handle, the surface will be disinfected. This means that each time a person touches the handle, it will be a clean surface. So that person doesn’t have to worry about all the germs and bacteria from the person opening the door before them.

Every time someone touches the handle, the surface will be disinfected.

According to the company, the smart door handle has sensors to trigger the PCB to start the disinfecting process when someone touches the door handle. A signal is sent to the magnetic aluminum ring to clean the surface using a disposable sponge lining. The sponge ring is sprayed with disinfectant and moves from side to side to clean the handle.

The total that the smart door handle takes to clean itself is less than 3 seconds. The company states that the disinfectant is capable of getting rid of nearly 99.99% of viruses and bacteria on the surface. Moreover, the door handle is IoT-enabled. It can connect to the WiFi network and has a lithium-ion battery. The data will be sent from the door handle to the Tweaq app installed on your phone. You can view the number of uses and replace the disinfectant cartridge after over 1000 uses.

The handle requires no additional wiring or drilling and takes less than 10 minutes to install. The price of the smart door handle starts at £349 or around Rs 35,300. For a pack of three, you will have to pay £799 or around Rs 80,637. For enterprises, the company also offers a subscription for $9 a month.
