This Indian Student Made An App To Help Patients Find Transplant Organs More Easily

OrganSecure app uses AI to keep track of organ donation for people to register themselves as donors as well as find a good match

Each day, 20 patients in the US alone, and many more all over the world die because they have no transplant organ. It all comes down to the lack of information, long waitlists, and rare matches.

However, an AI developed by Pratik Mohapatra, a student in Bengaluru, might save the day. He made an app called OrganSecure for tracking organ donation. Users may register themselves as donors, and people in need of a transplant can have access to the full list of available options, including cost, the closest organ bank, and other information.

The app also contains information on the local law regarding organ donation. When users confirm that they have provided data like antigen and blood type, the AI will proceed to predict the chance of a match. This app made by Pratik Mohapatra ranks third in Microsoft’s 2019 AI for Good Idea Challenge.

Mohapatra said that he took the inspiration from a web series on a man struggling to find a matching organ for his son. After seeing how hard it can be for patients in need of a transplant, he talked to some doctors to know more about this problem. Then, he had the idea of making the OrganSecure app.

This app has not been available to users yet. Mohapatra shared that he wanted to work with some major hospitals to come up with accuracy rates and set up a database first. After that, he would offer his app to the public. According to his plan, Organ Secure will appear in Karanataka and then be rolled out in other parts of India. His bigger targets are markets like Canada, China, South Korea, and the US.
