This Al Technique Can Detect Online Dating Scams

Instead of looking for a lover in the real world, a lot of people now prefer surfing the Internet to expand their online dating profiles. However, the road to reach true love is not always as beautiful and poetic as we think, especially when the countless fraudsters outside are looking at your pocket.

Researchers from the UK have recently introduced a new algorithm that can realize any online dating scam, and therefore, thousands of us won’t have to suffer from financial frauds and a broken heart.

Almost all of the online dating scams are conducted based on a similar principle. Someone will make a fake dating profile to attract their credulous preys who think they have found out a love connection. When the preys fall into the trap, the fraudster will do anything to earn money or gifts from them.

Under the leadership of experts of the University of Warwick, the researchers have developed an AI technique to analyze online dating profiles that are allegedly fake and detect their common factors. In the next step, it scans these profiles on popular dating sites to check the fake data, from photos, biographies, as well as demographic information.

As what the press release revealed, the AI reached the accuracy level up to 99%. Among all of the dating profiles it tagged as fake ones, only 1% was real. However, the number of scanned profiles has not been uncovered.

Two years ago, in 2017, in the United Kingdom, fraudsters swindled around $14,000 out of over 3,000 people. One of these researchers, Tom Sorell, said that money, in fact, is not the biggest loss of victims because they often tend to be desperate and sorrowful for a long time.

As of now, the researchers have kept improving this AI to ensure its functionalities can stop fraudsters from offering fake online dating profiles on the current platforms.
