The Indian Government Is Working On A Lost Phone Tracking System

With the new system of the Indian government, it may be easier to track lost or stolen phones even if a SIM is taken out.

Up until now, when searching for a stolen or lost phone in India, your options were limited. If you wanted to locate the phone, your SIM card needed to still be inside. However, with the new system of the Indian government, it may be easier to track your phone even if a SIM is taken out.

According to the Centre for Development of Telematics, a new technology system will be launched next month. The aim of the launch is to help people look for their stolen or lost phones if they are in the country. The tracking system will reportedly work even if there is no SIM card inside.

An official of the Department of Telecom said:

The launch date will fall somewhere at the beginning of August. This particular project known as “Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) has been assigned to the C-DoT since July 2017. The goal is to deal with counterfeit devices and cellphone theft. The project has a total budget of Rs 15 crore for it to be set up around the country.

The main method of the new system is to block all services on the lost devices, whether there is a SIM card or not. A common database is said to be developed for all telcos to share information about blacklisted mobile phones.
