Researchers at MIT have developed a new AI knitting system that could automate the design and manufacture of knitted garments.

If you wanted to have a custom woven hat but didn't have the required knitting skills, just lets the robots take care of that. From CSAIL (Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Lab) of MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), a group of researchers has developed an AI knitting system that could automate knitted garments' designing and manufacturing process.

With this system, even inexperienced knitters could create customized designs from templates on the computer. Then you would send that design to the knitting machine, that will materialize that design with real wool.

The benefit of this method when using a template is that the users can recreate garments of common shapes like gloves or hats easily. Plus, they can also choose the patterns and texture that they want the garment to have as well. More advanced users could also get creative by creating their patterns with their own designs. Moreover, this system also features an AI system which will help us generate panels from existing patterns.

The system is for everyone

During a test, even totally newbie users could use this system to make knitted gloves and hats, some also come with interesting patterns.

This system is undoubtedly impressive, but it does lack hand knitting's tactile creativity. According to the researchers, they want to make the whole knitting process easy for beginners as well as making the manufacturing process more efficient by reducing waste.
